A new catalog is in preparation „Coins and Banknotes of the Republic of Croatia 1991–2026“, which is scheduled to be published in about a month. It is a standalone printed book dedicated to the coins and paper money of the Republic of Croatia, ranging from the period of the Croatian dinar and kuna up to today's Croatian euros.
The catalog will be published in a clear A4 format, with texts in Croatian and English, and in paperback. The expected scope is approximately up to 90 pages, although the final number may still vary during the final formatting. The projected price of the book will be between 20 and 25 euros, and the exact price will be known after the completion of preparation, agreements with the printing house, advertisers, and sponsors.
The bulk of the content is already prepared for print, and the catalog is currently in the phase of data control, correction, and final alignment. Catalog and technical data, numbering, market prices, tables, photographs, and graphic elements are being checked so that the final edition is as precise, clear, and practical as possible for daily use. Although there is „only a little work“ left, in practice this takes time.
From the first book in 2004 to the new catalog in 2026.
I published my first book on numismatics back in 2004 under the title „Coins of the Republic of Croatia from Independence to the Present Day.“ Back then, I was still a 22-year-old student, and the book was published with the help of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka. I intended to publish a new edition of the book in 2024, on the twentieth anniversary of the release of the first book, but the project had to be postponed due to health and other circumstances.
The original idea was considerably broader than a classic catalog. An edition consisting of two large sections was planned. The first would be extensive guide to numismatics, conceived as a kind of textbook for both beginners and more experienced numismatists, while the second section would contain catalog of coins and banknotes of the Republic of Croatia.
During the work, it became clear that these are actually two content-wise different and sufficiently large projects. Combining them into a single book would lead to a large number of pages, a higher book price, and reduced practical usability. At the same time, the numismatics guide would be limited by the print format and could not be easily supplemented with new content.
Because of this, a decision was made to split the project. Croatian coin catalog comes out as a standalone printed book, while guide to numismatics develop as a separate online project within the NumizmatikaNET portal.
What does the new catalog include?
Numismatic catalog „Coins and Banknotes of the Republic of Croatia 1991–2026“ carries an overview of coins and paper money
of the Republic of Croatia from 1991 to the present (summer 2026).
The book will feature Croatian dinar banknotes, kuna coins and banknotes (circulating and commemorative coins), as well as euro coins. Special attention has been paid to individual packaging and commemorative coin sets.
Along with photographs, the catalog will contain all the most important information about different types of money, years of issue, mintage sizes, technical characteristics, metals, dimensions, and other details important to numismatists.
One of its most important parts will be current market prices expressed in euros. They will not be determined by simply copying data from older catalogs, but rather on the basis of current detailed market analysis, realized sales, auction results, dealer offerings, and the actual availability of individual editions.
An important advantage of this edition is also the timing of its release. This numesmatic catalog appears after the market for Croatian numismatic material has largely stabilized. Immediately following the introduction of the euro, large price fluctuations, numerous speculations, and significant market uncertainties were recorded. Individual editions were offered at very different prices, and the actual market value was often difficult to objectively determine.
In the meantime, market relations have crystallized significantly. Prices have become more stable, the market has matured, and collectors, dealers, and other participants in the numismatic market have become more clearly profiled. Because of this, it is now possible to more objectively assess market values and offer more reliable catalog prices than during the period of peak market uncertainty.
The catalog is intended for a broad numismatic audience: beginners who are just getting acquainted with modern Croatian currency, more experienced numismatists, dealers, auctioneers, and individuals who do not have much to do with numismatics, but who may have inherited a collection of Croatian money and want to determine what is in it and what the approximate market value of individual pieces is.
A Guide to Numismatics as an Online Project
The second part (more specifically – the first part) of the originally conceived book will not be abandoned. Numismatics Guide it will be published as a special online project within the NumizmatikaNET portal.
The internet format enables the project's content to be significantly more extensive than it could be in a printed book. Individual chapters will be able to be regularly updated, expanded, and corrected, as well as linked with photographs, tables, illustrations, and videos.
Guide it will cover basic numismatic terms; collection methods; types of collections; grades of preservation; rarity and numismatic value; proper storage and cataloging of the collection; trade, purchase, and sale; auctions; the issue of counterfeits; fraud; security risks, and numerous other practical issues.
The project will be intended for beginners, as well as collectors who want to expand their knowledge and avoid common mistakes. Unlike a printed book, the online guide will not have a fixed number of pages or a completely finished version, but will instead develop as a permanent and constantly updated knowledge base in the Croatian language.
In this way, both projects gain a clear and distinct purpose. The printed catalog will be a practical manual for identifying and evaluating Croatian coins and banknotes, while the online guide will provide broader knowledge about numismatics and collecting.
