It was there that he would develop the fingerprint classification system and become one of the pioneers in applying dactyloscopy to human identification. In 1891, he founded the Identification Service in La Plata, and the ten-finger system known as the Argentine or Vučetić system was later adopted in Argentina and a number of other countries.
Today, using fingerprints for identification seems almost self-evident to us, but in the late 19th century, a practical way had to be devised to systematically record, classify, and compare a huge number of different papillary line patterns. That was precisely the key to Vučetić's contribution. His system enabled the unique pattern that every person carries on their fingertips to become a practical tool for criminal identification.
