In today's video, we are talking about the largest Croatian circulating banknote until the introduction of the euro, the National Bank of Croatia 1000 kuna banknote with the issue date of October 31, 1993. From the release of this banknote into circulation in 1994 until its withdrawal from circulation on January 15, 2023, this banknote did not change its appearance and bore the inscription: HRVATSKA NARODNA BANKA, even though the Croatian central bank had long changed its official name.
The banknote features the image of Dr. Ante Starčević, a 19th-century Croatian politician known as the “Father of the Homeland.” Due to its relatively high nominal value, this banknote was not very common in circulation, nor did it frequently find its way into numismatic collections. It will be interesting to see what status it will hold in numismatics in the coming years.
