(…) One euro in Austria is known for Mozart, in Estonia all coins feature a geographical representation of that country, in Germany the 10, 20, and 50 cent coins preserve the Brandenburg Gate. In Italy, they boast Leonardo da Vinci's famous drawing with ideal body proportions, and in Slovenia, the motif of two Lipizzaner horses. The Spaniards have the profile of Miguel de Cervantes, the father of Spanish literature, Ireland has the Celtic harp, and the two-euro coin in Finland is adorned with the fruit and flower of the cloudberry.
Numismatists like Zlatko Viščević study ancient and modern coins. He believes that we should not copy either the Velebit degenia, nor corn, nor a bear, nor a nightingale onto the euro coin.
“My opinion is that since we are mostly a tourist country and everyone somehow recognizes us through that tourism, some of those most significant things that tourists can see should be put on the currency,” says a numismatics expert. (…)
