Banknotes have come a long way over the past hundred years or so. From large paper formats, often with simpler artistic designs and more modest security features, to modern polymer banknotes that today represent the pinnacle of security, technical, and artistic craftsmanship.
In this video, we show the evolution of banknotes through several selected examples. The goal is to show how banknotes have changed in terms of format, material, design, durability, and counterfeit protection.
At the beginning and during the first half of the 20th century, banknotes were often of a larger format. They were made of paper, and due to their size and material, they were more sensitive to wear, folding, soiling, and general deterioration in circulation. Many such banknotes are of interest to collectors today precisely because they are difficult to find in a well-preserved condition.
In the mid-20th century, banknote formats gradually began to shrink. They became more practical for everyday use, and their visual appearance grew increasingly rich. Various colors, more complex graphic elements, and advanced printing techniques were used more and more in their design. A banknote was no longer just a means of payment, but also a bearer of national identity, history, culture, and art.
In the 21st century, polymer banknotes are occupying an increasingly important place. They are made of a special type of plastic material that gives them greater durability, resistance, and the ability to incorporate very complex security features. Polymer banknotes are often visually very attractive, with transparent windows, metallic effect foil details, complex colors, and modern security solutions. Precisely for this reason, they also have a large number of fans among collectors.
One of the interesting questions that arises is whether in the future all banknotes will gradually transition to polymer. Will paper banknotes eventually become a part of the past, and polymer become the new standard in currency manufacturing?
Through a display of several examples from the last hundred years, we can clearly see how banknotes have changed. From large paper editions to modern, secure, and aesthetically very impressive polymer banknotes, the development of money shows how technology, economics, and art can meet in one small, yet extremely important object of everyday life.
