The kuna, the currency of the Republic of Croatia, was introduced on May 30, 1994. The Croatian National Bank issues coins in denominations of 5, 2, and 1 kuna, as well as 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 lipa.
On the obverse of the kuna coins, the background for the denomination is the figure of a running marten, while on the obverse of the lipa coins, the denomination is placed against a background of a linden twig with leaves and flowers. On the reverse of all lipa and kuna denominations, alongside the year, is a motif of a plant (on the lipa coins) or animal species (on the kuna coins) present in Croatia.
On odd-numbered years, the names of plants and animals are in Croatian, and on even-numbered years, in Latin.
