Croatian numismatics is richer by another expert title. The long-awaited catalog has been published „The money of the city of Split“, by Zlatka Viščević and Tomislav Dundović and is now available for order.
This is the first independent numismatic book that systematically and in a modern way covers the communal coinage of Split, thereby correcting a decades-long lack of a comprehensive treatment of this important segment of domestic numismatics. Although Split's coinage was previously addressed by numerous authors—from Luschin and Stockert to Rengje, Mimica, and Dobrinić—all previous studies were partial or published within broader thematic units.
The new book provides a comprehensive and methodologically consistent overview, prepared according to high standards already confirmed in the sold-out catalog „Slavonian Banovci.“ Thus, Split's municipal coinage receives an independent and comprehensive scientific and professional treatment for the first time.
The catalog includes a total of 73 types and as many as 271 variants of Split coinage, with 38 variants having been previously unknown in numismatic literature. This increases the existing catalog fund by 13 %, making this edition a particularly valuable contribution to the profession.
Each coin is shown in actual size and enlarged, along with detailed descriptions and clear tables of inscription and symbol variants. Reference numbers from earlier catalogs are listed side-by-side, allowing for easier orientation and comparison with existing literature. Of special value are the identifiers – visual guides that enable quick and precise recognition of individual types, which will be of exceptional use to both collectors and researchers.
The introductory part of the book provides an overview of the historical development of Split coinage, whereby the catalog goes beyond a purely cataloging function and gains an additional educational dimension.
