Croatian numismatics will soon receive a valuable new publication. Authored by Tomislav Dundović and Zlatko Viščević, a new book and numismatic catalog, “Slavonski banovci” (Slavonian Banovci), is being published. This is also the first independent catalog dedicated exclusively to Slavonian banovci in the history of Croatian numismatic publishing.
Until now, Slavonian banovci have been covered in the works of Truhelka (1897), Rengjeo (1959), Mimica (1994), and other authors, but they have never received a comprehensive and independent treatment. This book finally corrects that and gives Slavonian banovci the place in Croatian numismatics that they deserve.
What does the new catalog bring?
This hardcover book features 144 pages of high-quality art paper (measuring 23 × 16 cm), presenting 160 coin types and a remarkable 557 varieties, of which 194 have never been published in catalogs before. This represents an increase in the cataloged collection of a staggering 53% compared to previous works.
For comparison:
- Truhelka (1897) – 363 catalog units;
- Rengjeo (1959) – 347 catalog units;
- Mimica (1994) – 347 catalog units.
While the “Slavonian Banovci” catalog has 557 catalog units, which is the highest amount of data to date.
In the catalog, each coin is shown in actual size and magnified, with a detailed description and tables of inscription and symbol variants. Reference numbers from earlier literature (Truhelka, Rengjeo, Mimica) are also listed side by side, which facilitates the review and comparison of data.
One of the most valuable parts of the book are the identifiers – visual guides that help in the quick recognition of individual types and variants. This enables, for the first time, a simple and reliable identification of Slavonian banovci, which will significantly facilitate the work of collectors and researchers.
