On the portal NumizmatikaNET A new chapter has been published as part of the project „Guide to Numismatics”, intended for anyone who wants to systematically learn the basics of numismatics, as well as expand their existing knowledge.
The new, fifth chapter is entitled „Basic characteristics of coins and banknotes” and details the fundamental characteristics of metal and paper money. Readers can familiarize themselves with the materials from which coins and banknotes are made, their shapes, sides, rims and edges, coin rotation, edge inscriptions, and various elements that appear on money.
Special attention has been given to the face value, artistic representations, inscriptions, years of issue, mint marks, author signatures, countermarks, serial numbers, and signatures on banknotes. A large part of the chapter is also dedicated to the security features of banknotes, which include watermarks, security threads, microprinting, holograms, kinegrams, UV and IR elements, optically variable inks, and modern security systems.
The chapter also explains important numismatic terms type, variant and subvariant, that is, how specimens that may look almost identical at first glance differ from one another. Numerous examples and illustrations should facilitate the understanding of terminology, especially for beginners who are just entering the world of numismatics.
Project „Guide to Numismatics” It is designed as a gradually upgraded online knowledge base on numismatics, in which individual chapters will cover basic concepts, collection methods, coin identification and cataloging, and other topics useful to collectors.
