Croatian numismatics will soon be enriched by another exceptionally important publication. After the great success and sold-out book „Slavonian Banovci“, authors Zlatko Viščević i Tomislav Dundović soon they are presenting a new book – a numismatic catalog „The money of the city of Split“.
It is about the first independent numismatic catalog dedicated exclusively to the municipal coinage of Split in the history of Croatian numismatic publishing, which finally fills a major gap in domestic numismatic literature.
The first comprehensive study of Split coinage
So far, the money of the city of Split has been dealt with in the works of Luschin (1903), Stockert (1919), Rengjeo (1959), Mimica (1994), Dobrinić (2002), and other authors. Although there were high-quality professional papers and articles, there was never a standalone book which would systematically and comprehensively cover this important numismatic area. Even the most famous work on the communal coinage of Split, Stockert's „Le monete del comune di Spalato,“ is actually just an offprint from a collection of papers rather than a standalone book.
The new book „Money of the City of Split“ finally corrects this and presents Split's municipal money the place in Croatian numismatics that rightly belongs to him.
How did the development of the book proceed?
Following the successfully completed and today already sold-out catalog „Slavonian Banovci“, the authors did not stop with their research and publishing work. Even while „Slavonski banovci“ was going to the printers, work began on a new, equally demanding numismatic project.
The result of that intense and dedicated work is a new book – numismatic catalog „The Coinage of the City of Split“, crafted with the same approach, standards, and level of detail already recognized in the book on Slavonian banovacs.
It is about to the serious scientific and professional contribution to Croatian numismatics which will be interesting both to numismatist-collectors and to those who deal with Split currency on an academic level. The last relevant works on Split currency were published more than a hundred years ago, while later authors mostly integrated this field into broader thematic units. The situation is, therefore, almost identical to what it was with Slavonian banovci – but now an important numismatic field finally getting its own book.
What does the new catalog bring?
Hardcover book, on 104 pages of high-quality art paper (format 23 × 16 cm), brings:

- 271 variant
- What is it made of? 38 variants previously unpublished in catalogs
This increased the library's collection by 13 % compared to the previous state.
Each coin is shown life-size and magnified, along with a detailed description, and tables showing variants of inscriptions and symbols. Reference numbers from earlier literature (Dobrinić, Rengjeo, Stockert) are also listed side by side, which considerably facilitates comparison and work with existing sources.
One of the most valuable parts of the book are identifiers – visual guides that enable quick and reliable recognition of individual cash types. This makes it possible for the first time simple and precise identification of Split utility money, which will be of great help to collectors and researchers.
The introductory part of the book also covers historical development of Split coinage through the centuries, which gives the catalog additional scientific and educational value.
